Although a giant hit with foreign tourists and Japanese anime fans alike, the life-size Gundam robot statue will vacate its prominent spot in Tokyo’s Odaiba district next year.

The 18-meter-tall Mobile Suit Gundam robot outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza will be removed on March 5, Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. and the three other companies behind its installation, said on Dec. 1.

The statue was installed at the site in April 2012, but first emerged in the Odaiba district’s Shiokaze Koen park in July 2009 for a limited display.

Bandai Namco said the four companies are working on a new project, but did not disclose details.

The Gundam Front Tokyo theme park, an attraction for anime fans nearby, is also scheduled to close on April 5.
