“Mazinger Z,” the super robot anime genre pioneer from the 1970s, is set to return after 45 years in a new film, Toei Animation Co. has announced.

Details are yet to be revealed, but the tentatively titled “Mazinger Z the Movie” will be produced by the leading anime studio and distributed by Toei Co.

Toei Animation has unveiled a teaser visual showing the legendary robot’s signature attack, Breast Fire, a powerful energy blast shot from its chest panels.

It was also announced that the new film will be introduced during a stage show on March 26 as part of AnimeJapan 2017. The nation’s largest anime convention will be held from March 23-26 in Tokyo.

The original 92-episode “Mazinger Z” TV series was broadcast from 1972 to 1974, with the 68th episode marking its highest rating of 30.4 percent.

The robot anime was based on a manga of the same name by Go Nagai, which ran in the Weekly Shonen Jump comic anthology. The story centers around Koji Kabuto, who pilots the gigantic robot armed with various weapons to fight evil forces.

“Mazinger Z” became so popular that it inspired the super robot genre featuring robots controlled by a pilot from within a cockpit, including “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

It also gained international popularity after it aired in Europe, North, Central and South America and elsewhere across the world.

Guillermo Del Toro, who directed the Hollywood blockbuster “Pacific Rim,” is among the world’s leading creators who were largely influenced by “Mazinger Z.”
