Manga legend Leiji Matsumoto has collaborated with some of the nation’s best artisans to release ukiyo-e prints based on his representative works.

Featuring characters from “Galaxy Express 999,” “Space Battleship Yamato” and “Space Pirate Captain Harlock,” woodblock prints were produced by a group of veteran creators called Hirota-gumi. The members closely consulted with Matsumoto to convert his manga universe into the time-honored art form.

The paper used for the prints, the Echizen hosho, was created by Iwano Ichibei IX, a government-designated living national treasure.

Takezasado, which is hailed as one of Japan’s top woodblock printing studios, participated in the project with its traditional techniques that have been passed down for about 1,200 years. Popular calligrapher Fuka Ryo provided the title letterings.

For each of six ukiyo-e paintings, 1,000 prints will be available. The prints range in price from 95,000 yen ($830) to 100,000 yen. One in every 100 prints comes with Matsumoto’s autograph.

The prints are available for purchase at (http://broadexpert.tokyo/index.html).
