The fourth animated feature film adaptation of the “Yo-Kai Watch” series is set for nationwide release on Dec. 16.

"Eiga Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside: Oni-o no Fukkatsu” (Movie Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside: the resurrection of the demon-king) is set 30 years after the current story.

In the latest movie, the yo-kai creatures have their own “lightside” and “shadowside” forms, revealing ominous and sinister looks. Series regulars Jibanyan, Whisper and Komasan will also appear, but in different forms from the TV show.

With the tag line reading “Entering a new chapter,” the story also seems to include some elements of horror.

Meanwhile, the human characters are being reshuffled, introducing Natsume, a 13-year-old girl who likes to take care of others, Toma, also 13, a lonely boy from a household with two working parents, and Akinori, whose family has been practicing fortune-telling for generations.

The storyline posted on the official website tells the tale of a boy who had a mysterious “watch” that could control yo-kai. But he lost his ability to see the creatures when he became an adult, with the watch being buried away in time and space.

Thirty years later, a horrific virus starts infecting people’s malicious intentions and spreads inexorably. The only one who can save humanity must be chosen by the Yo-kai Watch.
