Acclaimed anime screenwriter Mari Okada will make her directorial debut with “Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana o Kazaro” (Let’s decorate the promised flowers in the morning of farewell).

The anime film will open nationwide on Feb. 24, 2018, with a teaser visual and a trailer unveiled on the film's official website.

Born in 1976, Okada launched her screenwriting career with a straight-to-video project in 1996 before writing her first anime project, “DT Eightron,” in 1998.

Okada became one of the leading anime screenwriters after her 2011 work, “Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.” In 2015, “The Anthem of the Heart” also became a big hit. She was acclaimed for delicately portraying the inner feelings of young boys and girls in both TV series.

In 2017, she provided a screenplay for a live-action film.

The teaser visual for the new film shows the backs of two characters running through a grassy field. The 30-second trailer begins with a long-haired girl running in a building.

The new film is being produced by anime studio P.A. Works Co., with which she teamed to make “True Tears” and “Hanasaku Iroha.”

Toshiya Shinohara serves as chief director, with Akihiko Yoshida providing original ideas for character designs. Yuriko Ishii is the character designer and chief animation director.
