HITACHI, Ibaraki Prefecture--The bodies of a woman and four boys were discovered in a burned-out apartment room here on Oct. 6 after a man told police he had set his home on fire.

A girl who was found unconscious at the scene was transported to a hospital and later died.

Hirobumi Komatsu, 32, who appeared at the Ibaraki prefectural police Hitachi Station shortly after 5 a.m., said, “I set (my house) on fire,” according to police.

When police went to the prefecture-run Kamitazawa apartment complex, an apartment room was engulfed by fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 5:48 a.m.

Komatsu also told police he had stabbed his family members, investigative sources said.

According to police, the six victims are believed to be the suspect's 33-year-old wife; his daughter, 11, an elementary school sixth-grader; his oldest son, 7; second son, 5; and 3-year-old twin sons.

Komatsu, who claimed to be a company employee, was arrested without a warrant on suspicion of killing his daughter at his home around 4:30 a.m. Multiple stab wounds and cuts apparently made by a sharp-edged tool were found on her body.

The suspect admitted to killing his daughter and also hinted that he killed his five other family members, according to police.
