After seven years, the long-awaited third season of the globally popular “A Certain Magical Index” anime series is in the pipeline, sending fans into a frenzy of anticipation.

The news that “A Certain Magical Index III” will air in 2018 was announced at a stage event held during the Dengeki Bunko light novel imprint’s fall festival on Oct. 1.

The anime is based on the light novel series of the same name by Kazuma Kamachi. First released in 2004 from Dengeki Bunko, the series boasts 16.35 million copies in circulation.

It was adapted into an animated TV series in 2008, followed by the second season in 2010 and a feature film adaptation in 2013.

Its spin-off series, “A Certain Scientific Railgun,” was also turned into an animated TV show.

The editor for the light novel series added that there are more projects coming out in 2018.

Meanwhile, a new episode of “A Certain Scientific Railgun” written by Kamachi will be published in the February 2018 edition of the monthly Dengeki Daio comic anthology set for release on Dec. 27.

Sega Games Co. will offer a video game produced in collaboration between its “Cyber Troopers Virtual-On” action game series and “A Certain Magical Index” in February 2018.
