KAIYO, Tokushima Prefecture--There’s not just light at the end of the tunnel on Asa Seaside Railway Corp.’s Asato Line, but thousands of illuminations inside, too, when a train adorned with a galaxy of blue “winter fireflies” passes through.

The single-car diesel train is lit up with 3,000 light-emitting diodes, dazzling passengers over a distance of 8.5 kilometers on a journey connecting Kaiyo in Tokushima Prefecture with Toyo in Kochi Prefecture.

“Passengers can enjoy the illumination day and night,” said a spokesperson for the railway company.

Half of the line is covered by tunnels, making it an ideal setting to highlight the illuminations effectively. The company will be taking advantage by running about 30 trains daily featuring the twinkling “Milky Way” until Jan. 14.
