Gardeners have been arranging "good fortune" bonsai trees at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to be used to greet the New Year.

The preparation of about 20 plant pots was taking place in earnest Dec. 26.

The bonsai will be used as decorations in the palace and the homes of imperial family members.

The old Japanese plum tree took center stage, joined by the Japanese black pine and Adonis, which are said to bring good fortune.

Gardeners added the finishing touches to the assorted bonsai trees by carefully placing moss on the soil.

The tallest of the potted perennials reached up to about 2 meters.
