Godzilla is set to terrorize movie screens again about six months after the first animated film featuring the “king of monsters” was released in Japan.

A sequel to “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters” will hit theaters in May 2018, titled “Godzilla: Kessen Kido Zoshoku Toshi” (The multiplying city mobilized for the final battle).

The anime movie released on Nov. 17 was the first animated adaptation in the popular “Godzilla” series. The gigantic monster has become a cultural icon after the first feature film was produced in 1954.

Making a clear departure from any of the previous movies, “Planet of the Monsters” is set in the future where humanity is facing a severe and difficult battle against the behemoth, which has dominated the Earth for 20,000 years.

The anime was written by Nitroplus’ Gen Urobuchi, whose past works include “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” and “Psycho-Pass,” based on his original story ideas.

Teaser posters and fliers for the anime sequel have been posted and distributed at cinemas showing the first anime film. A teaser visual shows what appears to be the gigantic mechanical remains piled up in the dark, indicating that humanity fought with “something.”

It is mentioned in “Planet of the Monsters” that humanity had secretly developed a super weapon called Mechagodzilla to defend the world from Godzilla.

It remains a mystery whether the details are revealed in the sequel.
