Yoichi Takahashi’s legendary soccer manga “Captain Tsubasa” will return to the small screen in a fresh animated adaptation.

The new series, kicking off on TV Tokyo Corp. and its affiliated networks in April, will tell the story of the original manga from the very beginning.

The original “Captain Tsubasa” manga centers around soccer prodigy Tsubasa Ozora as he and his friends face Genzo Wakabayashi, Kojiro Hyuga and other strong rivals from across Japan. After the manga started its run in 1981, it caused a stir and apparently inspired many boys who later became professional players at home and abroad.

The new series is directed by Toshiyuki Kato, whose past works include “Level E,” while it is produced by David Production Inc., which is known for “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.”

Voice actress Yuko Sanpei plays Tsubasa, while voice actor Kenichi Suzumura reprises his role of Genzo for the first time since the 1980s.

The new anime is updated to feature cellphones and other newfangled gadgets that were not around in the 1980s, Takahashi said in a statement.

On Dec. 13, a portal website for “Captain Tsubasa” was launched to provide information about the manga and anime franchise. Visit the portal at (http://ball-ha-tomodachi.com/).
