“Cutie Honey Universe,” a new TV anime series adaptation of “Cutie Honey,” will air this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of manga creator Go Nagai’s career.

The original manga centers around Honey Kisaragi, an android girl created by Dr. Kisaragi. After her father is murdered by a mysterious crime organization called Panther Claw, she transforms into a superheroine to fight the villains.

The cartoon series started its run in the weekly Shonen Champion comic anthology in September 1973. An animated TV series started airing in October the same year before it spawned live-action TV series and feature film adaptations.

The latest project is based on the concept of “cool and cute.” A teaser visual shows Honey in various costumes and hairstyles.

The story remains a mystery, but Nagai, whose past works include “Devilman” and “Mazinger Z,” is excited about the new project.

The series is directed by Akitoshi Yokoyama, with Natsuko Takahashi serving as the main screenwriter and Shuichi Iseki as character designer and chief animation director.
