The first live-action TV drama of the classic “Galaxy Express 999” manga and anime series will be broadcast live on the BS SKY PerfecTV satellite channel on 8 p.m. on June 18 in Japan.

The drama is titled “Galaxy Express 999: Galaxy Live Drama.”

Actress Chiaki Kuriyama, who shot to fame after playing Gogo Yubari in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill: Volume 1,” will play Maeter, while actor Oshiro Maeda portrays protagonist Tetsuro.

The story of the original manga and anime series centers around Tetsuro, whose mother is shot to death by a mechanical man. The boy seeks to obtain a mechanical body to become immortal, and receives a ticket for the galaxy train from a mysterious woman.

The star-studded cast also includes Kaname Ouki as Queen Emeraldas, Toshiyuki Someya as Count Mecha and Takashi Ukaji as Antares. Although the program will be broadcast live, it will incorporate a lot of CGI to recreate the epic universe.

The 60-minute show will be followed by a 30-minute talk program featuring the cast members and Akinori Nakagawa, who plays Tetsuro in the upcoming live-action musical adaptation of the series titled “Galaxy Express 999 -Galaxy Opera-.” They will talk mainly about their respect for the original creator of the series, Leiji Matsumoto.
