NIKKO, Tochigi Prefecture--A 36-year-old French woman who was visiting the popular tourist destination here, north of Tokyo, has been missing since she left her lodging on the morning of July 29.

Police are calling on the public to report any sighting of Tiphaine Veron.

The Tochigi prefectural police launched a public investigation and released a photograph of Veron to the public on Aug. 5 after it could found no trace of her whereabouts.

Police are investigating both the possibilities of her being caught up in an accident or a crime victim.

Veron is about 165 centimeters tall and has brown hair. According to her family in France, she has a health condition and could suddenly collapse.

Veron was scheduled to stay two nights at a lodging in Nikko on her own from July 28. She was last seen leaving her accommodations around 10 a.m. on July 29, and has since been missing.

Based on notes she left at the lodging, police searched tourist attractions in the area, including Nikko Toshogu shrine and Lake Chuzenjiko.

However, they could not find any reports of her sighting.
