HITACHINAKA, Ibaraki Prefecture--A sea of colors is illuminating the night at the central government-run Hitachi Seaside Park here as a vast field of kochia, called “hokigusa” in Japanese, are being lit up.

More than 30,000 plants of the ball-shaped annual herb, with diameters ranging from 60 to 70 centimeters, are illuminated in various colors, such as red and yellow, on the approximately 1.4 hectares of land.

The illumination, which is conducted from 6 p.m. through 9:30 p.m., began on Aug. 17 and is scheduled to last until Aug. 26.
