Toyota Motor Corp. is looking to rule the high seas with the launch of a luxury yacht under its high-end Lexus brand in the United States and Japan starting from late next year.

The LY 650, about 20 meters long and 6 meters wide, will have three staterooms and space for 15 people, the company announced on Sept. 8. LY stands for "luxurious yacht."

The boat can accommodate six people.

When the automaker was working on a prototype yacht, it was powered with an engine developed by Lexus.

But the company decided to switch to a maritime diesel engine manufactured by Swedish Volvo Group for introduction of the yacht in the market.

U.S.-based Marquis-Larson Boat Group will build the LY 650 for release in the United States in the latter half of 2019 and in Japan in the spring of 2020.

The company said it will announce the sales price of the yacht as the release date approaches.
