FUKUOKA--Grammy Award winner David Morales was arrested at Fukuoka Airport on suspicion of smuggling the synthetic drug MDMA, police said Oct. 7.

The 56-year-old American DJ and record producer denied the allegation, saying that the drug was not his and that somebody had likely slipped it into his belongings, according to police.

Police say that the suspect smuggled about 0.3 grams of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as ecstasy, from Hong Kong to Fukuoka Airport around 3:55 p.m. on Oct. 6.

A customs officer spotted a plastic bag containing five or six white crystals, each half the size of a rice grain, in the artist’s small wheeled case.

Morales was scheduled to participate in an event in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward on Oct. 7, according to police. He apparently stopped by Fukuoka to meet with people involved in the event.

Morales won a Grammy Award in 1998 for “remixer of the year,” according to his official website.

He has remixed and produced the songs of Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and other top artists.
