FUKUOKA--Although a 31-year-old man piled up the likes on Instagram with his drift driving prowess on mountain roads in the prefecture, at least one viewer wasn’t so impressed.

The person tipped off authorities about the driver, who will be referred to prosecutors on charges of malicious and dangerous driving, Fukuoka prefectural police said on Nov. 29.

In posts on Instagram, the company employee from Soeda in the prefecture showed off his brake-screeching drift driving technique.

“I wanted to show my drifting technique to many people, and I was happy to get many double taps (likes) on Instagram,” the man was quoted as saying by police.

The man is suspected of engaging in dangerous driving with his light truck on about 80 meters of winding mountain roads at around 4:50 p.m. on May 13 in Aka in the prefecture, according to the Tagawa Police Station.

Drifting is a technique in which a driver intentionally oversteers the vehicle to cause the rear wheels to lose traction through turns and thus maintain control through corners at a high rate of speed.

The man had his son, a second-year elementary school student, film his drift driving demonstrations.

More than 10 videos showing him drifting have been uploaded to his Instagram account, which boasts 3,000 followers, police said.

The man was charged with violating the Road Traffic Law, the obligation to drive safely, and other charges, the nation’s first such arrest stemming from a video uploaded on Instagram.

Papers were also filed with prosecutors against the driver on suspicion of violating the Road Trucking Vehicle Law, as the width of his light truck was illicitly enlarged, which helped him drift more easily.
