It's looking a lot like New Year's on Nakamise shopping street approaching Sensoji temple in Tokyo's historical Asakusa district.

The approach to the popular temple is adorned with giant traditional toys and charms, including a wooden tablet featuring a wild boar, a huge "koma" spinning top and "hagoita" wooden paddles.

The boar-themed "ema" charm, which is about 2.4 meters long and 1.5 meters high, was hoisted above the street ahead of New Year's Day. The wild boar is next year's lucky animal, according to the Chinese zodiac.

Throngs of visitors are expected to descend upon the popular sightseeing spot throughout the New Year holidays.
