NODA, Chiba Prefecture--The mother of a 10-year-old abused girl found dead after pleading for help from her school was arrested on Feb. 4 as an accomplice who just stood by and did nothing to help her daughter.

Nagisa Kurihara, 31, the mother of Mia Kurihara, was arrested on suspicion of inflicting bodily harm on the girl.

Her father, Yuichiro Kurihara, 41, was arrested on the same suspicion on Jan. 25.

Mia was found dead in the bathroom of her home in Noda on Jan. 24.

In arresting Nagisa Kurihara, police took into consideration the long period of time that she had tolerated her husband's alleged abuse of her daughter.

Police said that someone reported that Nagisa Kurihara also suffered from abuse at the hands of her husband.

According to police, Yuichiro Kurihara was arrested on suspicion of inflicting bodily harm on Mia by pulling her hair, placing her into a cold shower and grabbing her neck strongly with both hands, which left scratches on her neck.

Police said Nagisa Kurihara saw and heard Mia being abused, but is suspected of neither interceding nor reporting it to police.

Mia’s body was found by an emergency responders in the bathroom at around 11 p.m. on Jan. 24 right after her father made an 110 emergency call and reported that his daughter had lost consciousness and was not breathing.

Her mother and 1-year-old sister were also at home at the time. Mia was wearing casual clothing and was soaked. Part of her face was starting to show signs of rigor mortis, according to police.

“I became angry and slapped her from around 10 a.m," her father reportedly told police. "I also forced her to stand up and do squats. When I took her into the bathroom, she struggled against me. Pouring water on her made her health condition change suddenly, and I reported this immediately.

“This was discipline. I don’t think what I did was wrong,” he also said, according to police.

Police believe that after Mia suffered from abuse that night, both her father and mother left her alone for a while.

They also suspect that Yuichiro Kurihara had long physically and mentally abused his daughter on a daily basis.

In November 2017, Mia, responding to a questionnaire at her elementary school, wrote about her father’s “violence” and asked the teacher to “do something” to help her.

Although the girl was placed in temporary protective custody, when she later returned home, authorities failed to check on her condition or safety.

In January last year the school submitted to her father's demand that he be shown what his daughter wrote in the questionnaire.
