A mother and her daughter were killed after a car hit 10 pedestrians at two separate crosswalks and slammed into a garbage truck in the Higashi-Ikebukuro area of Tokyo’s Toshima Ward on April 19.

The mother, 31, was riding a bicycle with her 3-year-old girl in a child seat when they were struck by the vehicle, according to the Metropolitan Police Department and Tokyo Fire Department.

According to the Mejiro Police Station, the vehicle was driven by an 87-year-old man from Tokyo’s Itabashi Ward who was also injured in the accident.

After hitting one person at a crosswalk at 12:25 p.m. in Higashi-Ikebukuro, the vehicle continued moving and struck nine others at a crosswalk about 70 meters from the first one.

At the second crosswalk, the car hit and overturned the garbage truck.

The accident site was near the Higashi-Ikebukuro subway station on Tokyo Metro Co.’s Yurakucho Line.
