The head of Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), the largest business group in the country, will miss its annual general meeting to be held on May 30 for health reasons, according to sources.

Chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi, 73, will be absent due to a medical checkup at a hospital, they said on May 27.

It is extremely rare for a Keidanren chairman to skip the organization's annual general meeting.

Nakanishi also canceled his participation in a meeting of a council on climate change and information disclosure, which was scheduled to be held in Tokyo on May 27.

In addition, he has postponed his lecture meeting that was scheduled to be held at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo on May 29.

Nakanishi was elected as the Keidanren chairman in its general meeting held in May 2018. He has three years remaining in his term. Nakanishi also serves as chairman of Hitachi Ltd.
