Coca-Cola (Japan) Co. is looking for runners to carry the Olympic torch on part of its journey across Japan ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The company, an official sponsor of the torch relay, will start accepting applications via its app from June 17.

People interested in participating need to buy specific Coca-Cola products, collect points via the app, and note why they want to apply.

The company made the announcement June 10 at a presentation event in Tokyo featuring Japanese actor Haruka Ayase, Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima and soccer player Ritsu Doan.

Ayase, who held a torch for the event, said: "I enjoyed it, though I was a bit nervous, as I felt the weight of the torch. I want many people to apply to be a runner."

Toyota Motor Corp., Nippon Life Insurance Co. and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) are also official sponsors of the relay. They will accept applications from June 24, while prefectural governments will start from July 1.

The deadline for all applications is Aug. 31.

While there are five opportunities to apply, an individual applicant can run only once.

A total of 10,000 people will participate in the torch relay, which will pass through all 47 prefectures across Japan. The exact number of torchbearers to be selected from the public was not disclosed.
