Scenes from Makoto Shinkai’s new animated film, “Weathering with You,” were released ahead of its July 19 premiere, revealing a mysterious ability of one of the main characters.

The elaborately drawn illustrations show the protagonists, Hodaka Morishima and Hina Amano, who have to make life decisions as they are tossed about by their fates when the balance of weather is increasingly disrupted.

Hodaka is a senior high school student who runs away from his remote island home and finds a job at a small publishing company as a live-in employee. One day, he meets Hina, a part-time worker who lives with her grade-schooler brother. It is revealed that Hina has the ability to stop the rain and clear the sky by praying.

Shinkai is teaming up with planner and producer Genki Kawamura and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka, whom the director worked with for his previous project, “Your Name.”

Atsushi Tamura, whose previous works include “The Cat Returns” and “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin,” serves as animation director, while Hiroshi Takiguchi, who has worked with Shinkai for his “The Garden of Words,” reprises his role as art director.

Hodaka is played by Kotaro Daigo, while Hina is voiced by Nana Mori.
