Anime house Studio Ponoc Inc. will produce an animated short inspired by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee.

The short will be released in the lead-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from July 24 to Aug. 9 next year.

Studio Ponoc was commissioned by the IOC to co-produce the short as part of the international Arts and Culture Programs led by the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage. The programs are aimed at engaging leading modern artists to reinterpret the links between sport and culture fundamental to the Olympic Movement and helping foster a fresh and dynamic dialogue with society around the Olympic values.

The anime studio was founded by ex-Studio Ghibli Inc. producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. Studio Ponoc is known for “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” and other works.

After completion, the Ponoc-IOC co-produced short will be collected by the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is also being considered for screening next year at the annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, in addition to being shown at various Olympic-related events in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics.
