SAPPORO--A wandering bear caused a commotion in a residential area of the Misumai district of Minami Ward here on the evening of Aug. 7 before it left the following morning.

Residents made an emergency call to police at 7:10 p.m. after spotting a bear in their neighborhood. A bear climbing the trees in the residential yard was also sighted in the Fujino district of the same ward.

According to the Sapporo-Minami Police Station, the bear roamed through the residential area for nine hours until 4:20 a.m. the following day before returning to the mountains.

After police received the emergency call, five patrol cars patrolled the area while asking residents to refrain from going out if not necessary.

No injuries were reported from the bear's presence, but corn in a family's garden was eaten.

According to the Minami Ward office, the bear ranged from about 1.2 to 1.3 meters in length. There have been 130 or more sightings of bears or their footprints in the ward this year. Residents have been notified to be on the alert.
