The main voice cast members for an animated TV series adaptation of “Beastars” have been announced, including Chikahiro Kobayashi as Legoshi, a gray wolf, and Sayaka Senbongi as the dwarf rabbit Haru.

Kobayashi is a popular voice actor who plays Saichi Sugimoto in “Golden Kamuy.” Senbongi is known for portraying Mumei in “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.”

The “Beastars” anime is based on a manga of the same name by Paru Itagaki that currently runs in the Weekly Shonen Champion comic anthology. The manga won the Originality Prize at the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2018 and other awards.

It is an ensemble coming-of-age story set in a world where carnivorous and herbivorous animals coexist, but eating meat is considered a felony. Anthropomorphic animals suffer from many problems arising from prejudice, love and their weaknesses.

The story opens when Tem, an alpaca and member of the Drama Club at Cherryton Academy, is killed and devoured. No culprit is found, and the prestigious school is hurled into a spiral of unease.

Legoshi is another Drama Club member who is gentle, quiet and socially awkward. But when he meets Haru, the carnivore student is baffled by his own feelings for his herbivore classmate because he is not sure whether he loves her or wants to eat her.

The series will air on Fuji Television Network Inc.’s “+Ultra” anime programming block in October. It will also be exclusively streamed on Netflix.
