Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony on Oct. 22 provided many photogenic moments, even outdoors in the inclement weather.

The big day for Naruhito and Empress Masako started early in the morning when they departed their residence at Akasaka Palace and headed to the Imperial Palace to perform rituals to proclaim Naruhito’s ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne.

In the evening, the couple hosted a banquet at the Imperial Palace for foreign guests and other dignitaries.
