■Under fire, Aso retracts remark about learning from the Nazis:
After sparking a barrage of criticism at home and abroad, Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso retracted his suggestion that Japan can learn from Nazi Germany about changing the Constitution “without being noticed.”
“It is regrettable that (my statement) has caused misunderstanding of my real intentions,” Aso, a former prime minister long known for his gaffes, told reporters on Aug. 1.
