Iridescent firefly squid beach themselves along the coast of Toyama before dawn on Friday. The phenomenon is observed only in the dark of the new moon at full tide when the sky is clear. According to the Uozu Aquarium in Uozu, Toyama Prefecture, firefly squid, which live in the deep sea, come close to shore during the spring spawning season. They can become stranded on shore due to difficulties in judging the distance to the sea's surface caused by the lack of moonlight. The phenomenon started late at night. The peak period lasted for about 30 minutes.(IHT/Asahi: April 5,2008)
