Briefly:Jet's emergency lights off for 10 days

A Japan Airlines Corp. jetliner made 57 flights over 10 days in April with malfunctioning emergency lights in the passenger cabin, company officials said.

The transport ministry has told the company to look into the cause and prevent a recurrence.

The 166-seat McDonnell-Douglas MD-90 passenger aircraft underwent a maintenance check from March 20 to April 2 at JAL's group company Nitto Maintenance Co.

Three lights, including an emergency exit sign, were disconnected when the seats and floor were removed for maintenance, JAL officials said. Flight crews failed to notice the lamps did not light up until April 13, JAL said.(IHT/Asahi: May 8,2008)
