Briefly:Doctor held after firing police gun

Police arrested a 42-year-old doctor after he snatched a handgun from a police officer and fired a shot in front of his child's elementary school in Tokyo's Suginami Ward Wednesday morning.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 8:15 a.m.

Hiroshi Ogino, of Setagaya Ward, was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer from performing his duty, theft and violation of the sword and firearm control law, police said.

Ogino's estranged wife called police to report she had argued with her husband and feared attack. The shooting occurred after the police officer escorting the mother and child to school tried to calm down Ogino.(IHT/Asahi: May 8,2008)
