Briefly: Earthquake rattles Kanto

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 jolted the Kanto region early Thursday, causing minor injuries to six people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an early warning but it arrived about a minute after the 1:45 a.m.quake hit.

Buildings were rattled in the Tokyo area and the temblor registered a seismic intensity of lower 5 on the Japanese scale of 7 in Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures.

The quake's focus was 50 kilometers under the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture.(IHT/Asahi: May 9,2008)
