Briefly: 1 billion yen more in aid to Myanmar

Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said Friday that Japan will provide up to $10 million (about 1 billion yen) in emergency aid to Myanmar (Burma) after a huge cyclone.

At least 23,000 people died and 42,000 more are missing after the storm struck early this month, according to the country's military junta.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae met Myanmar Ambassador Hla Myint at the ministry Friday to ask that aid personnel be allowed into Myanmar.(IHT/Asahi: May 10,2008)
