TAKAMATSU--The Kagawa prefectural government agreed Monday to pay 8.2 million yen to a man and his wife who was apparently implanted with the wrong fertilized egg.

The settlement was drawn up by the Takamatsu District Court.

The woman, in her 20s, became pregnant in September 2008, following fertility treatment at Kagawa Prefectural Central Hospital.

The woman underwent an abortion in her ninth week of pregnancy in November after doctors said she had likely received the wrong fertilized egg.

In a suit filed in February, the couple sought about 22 million yen in compensation.

The 61-year-old doctor who treated the woman received an official reprimand Monday.(IHT/Asahi: October 20,2009)
