The forecourt of the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo's Minato Ward was opened to the public Thursday as part of events to mark the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's ascension to the throne.

Visitors can take pictures from outside the historic building, which serves as the state guest house, until Saturday.

Built in 1909 as the crown prince's residence, the Akasaka Palace is believed to be the only example of neo baroque-style construction in Japan.

The education ministry's Council for Cultural Affairs has recommended it be designated a national treasure.

The building was remodeled into a state guest house in 1974.(IHT/Asahi: November 27,2009)
