Regional cooperation, peace process discussed

A symposium on international politics attended by Japanese and South Korean scholars was held Nov. 16 on Awajishima island in Hyogo Prefecture.

The event, supported by The Asahi Shimbun Asia Network, focused on two key themes.

The first, ''Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia and the Japan-Korea Relationship,'' focused on the need for regional cooperation between Japan, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and China. Moves to secure a free trade agreement formed a key element of this discussion.

The second part of the symposium was devoted to ''The Peace Process on the Korean Peninsula and the Japan-Korea Relationship.'' South Korean President Kim Dae Jung's ''sunshine policy'' toward the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), which is intended to foster peaceful coexistence between the two Koreas, was examined from a variety of perspectives.

The following are keynote addresses given by four university professors, two each from Japan and South Korea.

China strikes regional balance (Akio Takahara)
Sunshine policy a cause of current storm (Yoo Ho Yeol)
Regional community an attainable goal (Namkung Gon)
Korth Korea issues complex (Shunji Hiraiwa)
