The Environment and Sustainable Development in Rural and Urban Areas Rural Areas - Part Two
Consumer Power
In Southeast Asia, the forest equivalent of two-thirds of Japan's land area was lost during the ten years from 1990 to 2000. That destruction has not stopped yet. What measures should be taken to restore and maintain forests as well as rural areas? It is important to encourage the initiative of people who are living there, but there are limits to this approach. Meanwhile, there is no reason for urban consumers in developed countries to be helpless in relation to this. Two ANN research fellows of The Asahi Shimbun will suggest how to empower consumers' capabilities.
