Childbearing Not Women's Only Choice

かつて、王侯の結婚は政略的な色合いが濃かった。オーストリアの女帝マリア・テレジアは、同盟強化のため、娘のマリー・アントワネットをフランス王室に嫁がせた。14歳だった娘を気遣う母と、ベルサイユ宮殿で暮らす娘との間の書簡が残されている▼テレジアが、結婚の狙いを成就させるものとして繰り返したのは子を得ることだった。「あなたにとっては、子供を授かるのが何よりも大事な使命なのですし、子供を産むことであなたの幸せは揺るぎないものとなるのです」（『マリー・アントワネットとマリア・テレジア　秘密の往復書簡』藤川芳朗訳・岩波書店）▼結婚から８年たって、女児が生まれた。次を促すテレジアは、自身の死の数カ月前にも「私たちにはどうしても王太子が必要なのです」と書き送る。アントワネットの立場は、国の命運にかかわる「産む機械」のようだった▼後の大革命でアントワネットが断頭台に消えて、200余年がたつ。女性を「産む機械」と見るような時代は去ったはずだが、この国の閣僚、しかも少子化を担当する厚生労働相が口にした▼今でも世間には、家の跡継ぎという言い方が残る。国家も一つの家であり、女性には跡継ぎを残す責任があるなどという見方が、発言の背景にあるのだろうか▼アントワネットの初産にはオーストリア大使が立ち会い、テレジアに報告した。分娩（ぶんべん）の一瞬後に痙攣（けいれん）を起こし、一時は危険な状態になったという。立場は「産む機械」でも、命がけでお産に臨む姿は「機械」などではなかったはずだ。(２月１日付)

　Back in the days when royal marriages were arranged purely for political expediency, Maria Theresa (1717-1780), the Holy Roman empress and archduchess of Austria, married off her youngest daughter to the future king of France to bolster the Franco-Austrian alliance. The girl, Maria Antonia (1755-1793) ― better known by her French name of Marie Antoinette ― was 14 when she began her married life at the Palace of Versailles. The anxious mother sent her beloved daughter some secret letters of advice that exist to this day.

　In her letters, Maria Theresa repeatedly reminded Marie Antoinette that the goal of her marriage wouldn't be fulfilled unless she gave birth to an heir. She said to the effect, "Becoming a mother is your most important mission. Bearing children will cement your happiness." A Japanese translation of this letter by Yoshiro Fujikawa is included in "Mari Antowanetto to Maria Terejia: Himitsu no Ofuku Shokan" (Marie Antoinette and Maria Theresa: Secret Correspondence), published by Iwanami Shoten Publishers.

　Eight years into her marriage, Marie Antoinette bore her first child, a girl. A few month before her death, Maria Theresa wrote to Marie Antoinette that she "simply must give birth to a prince." So it seems Marie Antoinette's function was that of a "birth-giving machine," on which the fate of the nation hung.

　More than 200 years have passed since Marie Antoinette was guillotined at the height of the French Revolution. The age in which women were regarded as only "baby-making machines" is long gone. Yet in Japan, the health minister, of all people, voiced this same outrageously anachronistic thinking the other day. This man is in charge of dealing with the nation's declining birthrate.

　Even in this day and age, there are people who still talk of perpetuating the family name by producing offspring. The minister's remarks could be a reflection of his belief that, since the nation can be seen as a kind of "family," it is the duty of women to bear heirs to the nation.

　When Marie Antoinette gave birth to her first child, the Austrian ambassador to France was among a throng of witnesses present in her bedchamber. According to the ambassador's report to Maria Theresa, Marie Antoinette fell into convulsions the moment after delivering her baby, and she remained in critical condition for a while. Marie Antoinette's role in life might have been that of a "birth-giving machine." But she gave birth even at the risk of her own life.

女性の尊厳を傷つけた「産む機械」発言

●政略的な (for...expediency)　政治的利益のために婚姻当事者の意思を無視して取り決めた結婚だったことから、expediency (便宜主義、利己主義) を使って訳している。形容詞形が expedient でしばしば「～するのが得策だ」の意味で It is expedient that you (should) attend the meeting. (その会議に出席するのが得策だ) のように使う。通例「政略結婚」＝ marriage of convenience。このconvenience は「好都合なこと」の意味から「打算の結婚」となる。Does that meet with your convenience? (それで御都合はよろしいですか？)、Please reply to my message at your earliest convenience. (都合がつき次第御連絡ください) の convenience も同じ。

●嫁がせた (married off)　「親が娘を～に嫁がせる」の意味の句動詞で「嫁にやる」というニュアンスが訳出できる。Mr. Smith married all his daughters off to lawyers or dot-com billionaires. ＝スミスさんは娘をみんな弁護士かインターネット関連企業の億万長者に嫁がせた。動詞 marry の用法について日本語の「～と」に引きづられて marry with としないことに注意。「僕と結婚してくれますか？」は Will you marry me? で with や to は入らない。ちなみに divorce もJohn divorced his wife. (妻と離婚した) のような他動詞用法がある。

●国の命運にかかわる(on...hung)　the fate of the nation hung on a birth-giving machine ということで hang on は事の成り行きが「～で決まる、かかっている」の意味。Our company's future hangs on the sales of this product. ＝我が社の将来はこの製品の売れ行きにかかっている。「～の運命を左右する」の意味のイディオムに make or break があり、... a birth-giving machine that could make or break the fate of the nation. と訳すのも一案。

●断頭台に消えて (was guillotined)　考案者のフランス人医師 J.I. Guillotin の名前に由来し、動詞では「ギロチンで人の首をはねる」の意味になる。send＋人＋to the guillotine で「斬首刑を言い渡す」の意味。ちなみに Bloomer (ブルマー)、Derby (ダービー)、Lynch (リンチ)、Sandwich (サンドイッチ)、Silhouette (シルエット) などはすべて人名がルーツの英語。Marie Antoinette had her head cut off. と表現できるように、日本語の「頭」は頭髪が生えている部分を指し、顔は含まない。他方、英語の head は顔を含んで首から上を指す。「窓から顔を出さないで下さい」＝Don't put your head out of the window. で、face や neck でなく head を使うことに注意。
