「エアリアルヨガ」で空中浮遊!?

 ダイエットに熱心なジェイミーは従来のヨガに加えて、今回初めて「エアリアルヨガ」に挑戦しました。天井から垂らしたハンモックのような布を補助具として使い、身体を効果的に伸ばします。「エアリアルヨガ・ジャパン」のインストラクター、谷口美里さんの指導で、ジェイミーは逆立ちもやってみました。水色の布に包まれると、海の中にいるようでリラックス効果も。小さい頃は体が弱かった谷口さんはヨガを始めて体調が良くなったので、他の人の体を整える仕事にやりがいを感じているそうです。

 Up until now, a hammock has always been for relaxing. Certainly I'd never thought of it as an exercise tool, unless you count exercising my arm by reaching for a cold glass of lemonade! But doing aerial yoga changed not just my view, but my life as well!

 Truth be told, I am ready for a change. This year, I got a new apartment, a new cat and even a new centimeter! Yes, I grew 1 centimeter this year! I also have more energy now than I have ever had, and it's all thanks to yoga!

 Aerial yoga is a type of yoga performed while hanging from a cloth from the ceiling, sort of like a hammock. It's similar to regular yoga in that you have to do all sorts of strange poses, like the "downward dog," but by adding the hammock, you open up a whole new set of possibilities.

 I started boring old regular yoga on my own last February. I just thought that it would be really cool to be able to do the splits, like the performers in Cirque du Soleil, so I started practicing with videos on YouTube. I was doing pretty well, but it was nothing compared to what happened to my body after I finished my first one-on-one aerial yoga class.

 It was a hot summer afternoon when I arrived at Misato Taniguchi's cozy studio in Setagaya, Tokyo.

 "It's nice to meet you, Jamie," she said. I could feel her friendliness from across the room. But I was nervous as I looked at the three giant blue fabric hammocks hanging from the ceiling. Would I be any good at this?

 It wasn't until I had been hanging upside down, swinging back and forth, and stretching my arms out as if I could fly for about an hour, before I realized that I was having fun. The blood was still rushing to my head, and I looked in the mirror to see a pink tint to my cheeks.

 Taniguchi-san said "I want to help people.

 "Yoga doesn't just feel good. It actually changes and fixes things that are wrong with your body," she added.

 What? Had I heard her right? Maybe my ears were playing tricks on me after the workout.

 She smiled. "I'll give you an example," she said. "When I was younger, I walked pigeon-toed, but it actually corrected itself after I started doing yoga. My stomach problems got better, too. Yoga made living itself easier. My childhood friends see me now and can't believe how much I've changed."

 I've changed, too. I've only been doing yoga for eight months now, and aerial yoga once, but my world has been literally turned upside down! This is definitely something that I am going to stick with. In fact, with all of this energy, I feel as if I am going to fly!
