Violet Mumpfort　――オレゴン州の田舎町、グリーンビルで美容院を経営するおしゃべりで派手好きな中年女性
Sheriff Roy Polk　――この町で暮らす人々の安全を守る、頼りになるやさしい保安官
Justin Pirotti　――グリーンビル出身のサッカー大好き青年。現在、ポートランドの大学で学んでいるが、今は夏休みで帰省中

■ At the Fourth of July Picnic, Marie, Justin and Sheriff Polk compete in a watermelon seed-spitting contest.

Violet:(Announcing with a microphone) Here are the finalists for the Greenville Fourth of July Picnic's fifth annual watermelon seed-spitting contest. On the right we have our returning champion, Sheriff Roy Polk. Sheriff, do you have anything to say to the audience?

Roy:(Takes microphone) Thank you all for coming out here to cheer me on. I'm going to win.

Violet:Thank you, Sheriff. Next we have 21-year-old Justin Pirotti. Justin, were you able to practice your seed spitting while you were at college this year?

Justin:(Takes microphone) I don't need to practice. I'm a natural.

Violet:And our last finalist is Marie Pirotti, Justin's sister. Congratulations on making it to the finals, Marie. Are you nervous?

Marie:No, I'm not nervous at all. I'm ready to win.

Violet:OK, finalists. Here are the rules. You each have one piece of watermelon in front of you. You have five minutes to spit up to 10 seeds. The one who spits his or her seed the farthest from this line is the winner. (Looks at her stopwatch.) On your mark ... get set ... go!

(Five minutes later, Violet announces the winner.)

Violet:This year the first prize goes to Marie Pirotti for spitting a seed 12 feet and 3 inches!

■７月４日（独立記念日）の野外イベントで、マリー、ジャスティン、ポーク保安官が、スイカの種飛ばしコンテストで競い合う。

バイオレット：（マイクを手に大声で言う）７月４日を祝うグリーンビル・ピクニック恒例のスイカの種飛ばしコンテスト、第５回決勝戦出場者のみなさんです。右にいらっしゃるのが、昨年の優勝者ロイ・ポーク保安官です。保安官、観客の方々に何かひと言ありますか？

ロイ：（マイクを手に取る）みなさん、私を応援しに来てくれてありがとうございます。勝ちますよ。

バイオレット：保安官、ありがとうございました。次は２１歳のジャスティン・ピロッティさんです。今年は大学で勉強しながらでしたが、種飛ばしの練習はできましたか？

ジャスティン：（マイクを手に取る）練習は必要ありません。僕には持って生まれた才能がありますから。

バイオレット：それから最後の決勝戦出場者がマリー・ピロッティさんです。ジャスティンの妹さんです。マリー、決勝進出おめでとう。緊張していますか？

マリー：いいえ、まったく緊張していません。勝つつもりです。

バイオレット：では、決勝戦出場者のみなさん。ルールを説明します。目の前に、ひとり１個のスイカがあります。時間は５分、最大１０個までの種を飛ばせます。この線から最も遠くに種を飛ばした人が勝ちです。（ストップウオッチを見る）位置について…ヨーイ…始め！

（５分後、バイオレットが優勝者を発表する）

バイオレット：今年の優勝者は、１２フィート３インチ（約３．７３メートル）を飛ばしたマリー・ピロッティさんです！

復習のポイント

'cheer … on'----会話の中で使われている cheer ... on には「…を大声で応援する、強く励ます」という意味があります。チームや人を声援する場合に使われます。

Although the baseball team lost 10 games in a row, the fans are still cheering it on.
(その野球チームは10連敗したが、ファンはまだ応援し続けている)
While I was recovering in the hospital, all my friends cheered me on.
(僕が入院中に快方に向かっていると、友達がみんなで強く励ましてくれた)

'make it'----make it は「成功する、うまくいく、成し遂げる」という意味で使われます。

Don't give up. You can make it.
(あきらめちゃだめだ。君ならできる)
John is very creative. I think he can make it to the top in the computer graphic industry.
