サーフィン留学で英語と人生の波に乗れ

　豪州といえばサーフィン大国。サーフィンをする有名スポットも数多い。ライバルのハワイより、物価も安く、豪州政府のワーキングホリデー制度によって、外国人の若者も働きながらサーフィンを楽しめる。 豪州で英語とサーフィンを磨き、帰国後、海外留学のベンチャー企業のオーシャンズ国際サポートセンター（東京・中野）を2004年に立ち上げ、豪州に日本人サーファーを送り出しているのが山戸哲也氏と身知子夫人だ。２人は社会人になった後、豪州に渡航したのが共通点だ。

　What could be cooler than riding the waves on a surfboard in the morning and studying English in the afternoon in Australia?

　That's the kind of sales pitch that Tetsuya Yamato of the Oceanz International Support Center in Tokyo can offer his Japanese clients. Yamato started Oceanz to counsel surfing enthusiasts who want to combine their hobby with English study in Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world.

　Yamato, 37, explained the origin of his company name, "Oceanz." He said that he has interpreted Oceanz to mean an "expansive, spectacular ocean," and his company logo "has the image of flying to other countries over waves, over oceans."

　Yamato visited Australia on a working holiday program in 1994 when he was 25, after having worked in Japan for three years. For eight years, while living in Sydney, he worked for Jalpak International Oceania Sydney, which arranges holiday package for Japanese. During his free time, he could also enjoy his favorite hobby, surfing.

　After returning to Japan, he worked at an agency that offers study-abroad programs. While working there, he met his future wife, Michiko, at the office, who had also studied abroad in Australia. Their common interest and experiences in the country Down Under brought them together, and he even got Michiko interested in surfing.

　The two opened Oceanz in 2004.

　"I love Australia, I love surfing, my new job could keep me in touch with Australia, and I could use my experiences and knowledge," he said.

　The market for surfing and English-study trips is not a huge one, but with more Japanese taking up surfing, the demand is growing.

　Yamato offers various packages, for example, enrollment in a surfing school while on a working holiday.

　Along with language schools, Oceanz also can recommend good surfing locations along with offering information on surfboards, wet suits and wave conditions. Few study-abroad support centers could offer comparable information.

　Yamato said there are many people who want to try surfing when they are on a working holiday, so Oceanz can steer them to the right places.

　Participants are mainly in their 20s or early 30s and their surfing skill varies. Some want to learn the sport at an Australian school, some want to improve their skills while others aspire to become professional surfers.

　Oceanz sends about 10 to 15 participants abroad each month for studying-and-surfing stints that can last from a week to a year. The cost runs from about 100,000yen to 800,000yen.

生活は70％が英語 30％がサーフィンに

　実際に現地で英語を勉強中のサーファーに会ってみた。シドニー郊外にあるサーファーにとって絶好のポイントのひとつ、マンリービーチの前には、シドニー最大級の語学学校ACE（Australian College of English）のマンリー校がある。昨年秋から同校で学ぶ遠藤愛さん（21）に会い、教室の外のビーチに向かった。

　愛さんは、静岡県湖西市の親子サーファー。ソニーの関連の技術関係の部署で働いている時、「周囲に普通に２、３カ国語話せる人がいて、その人たちを見て"ああ、英語を覚えたいなぁ"と思い、いきなりここに来ました」という。

　将来の夢は、英語学校などの英語の先生で、児童英会話の教師の資格を目指す。「結婚とかしたら家でできる仕事は何かなと思って。子供に英語を教えたいの」と夢は膨らむ。

　白い波がブレイクするビーチを前に、「生活は70％が英語、30％がサーフィンのつもりだったけど、宿題と学校は手抜きをしたくないので、サーフィンはまだ全然です」という。

　ビーチで写真を撮りに行く途中には、多くの外国人の留学仲間からあいさつを受け、皆が振り返るほどの人気者。サーファーの知人も何人かできてきたという。

　次は、サーフィンの隠れ名所の中国で、サーフィン留学を実現させるのが夢だ。

自分探しサーファー、人生の大波を待つ

　取材の最後は、Manlyよりさらに遠い有名なサーフスポットに向かった。DeeWhy Beach沿いにあるレストラン、Wockbarでコックとして働く田中敏忠さん（28）と会った。高校時代、「ただ、女の子にもてたいという理由で」、週末は自宅の山梨から茅ケ崎にサーフィンに通った。工学院大学卒業後、メーカーに就職し、電子顕微鏡のメンテナンスなどをやり、世界を巡り英語と出会ったが、学生時代から経験した飲食業の世界になんとなく舞い戻った。仕事や気持ちにも、波はつきもの。

　「半導体を通じて経営のやり方や人について、また異文化など、多方面からの見方を学べたので、それを飲み屋の経営に生かして、２年後に飲み屋でうまく売り上げを出すことができました。でも次に日本料理を極めようとしたが、激務で精神的にも辛くて」挫折。「逃げじゃないか」と言われたが、昨年秋には豪州の波に乗っていた。

　大好きな人に「小さくまとまるなよ」とよく言われていたので、大きく動いてみようかなと思ったという。

　今はWockbarで働き、月収は20万円。タイ料理、中華料理、ベトナム料理などを作りながら、この地で機械エンジニアの職を探す。「専門技能や経験について自分を英語で売り込んだが、英語力不足のために経験不足と思われて失敗した」「シリコンバレーで鍛えた電気の英語もいまひとつだった」という経験も持つ。昨年の秋口にはマンリーのACEに通った。

　丸刈りのガッツのあるサーファーだが、いい波が来ると待っていられないらしい。取材は海の中になった。筆者も海に入って撮影。「若いのに波乱万丈の人生、人生の波にもうまく乗ってほしい」と願って、全行程の取材を終えた。
