Messages from Hiroshima

'Chokubaku' means that the person was exposed to the A-bomb directly in Hiroshima or Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped.

Takiko Okamoto (female)
'Chokubaku'  2 km from the hypocenter / 14 years old at the time
Atop a heap of charred bodies on the school ground crawled a baby.
Suzuko Numata (female)
'Chokubaku'  1 km from the hypocenter / 22 years old at the time
Early on the morning of August 10, an operation without anesthesia saved my life―amputation at the thigh of my left leg, which was rotten up to the knee.
Akira Ito (male)
'Chokubaku'  2 km from the hypocenter / 18 years old at the time
Looking closely, it was unmistakable―maggots covered the eyeballs, noses, lips, and wounds in the legs and arms of the victims.
Anonymous (female)
'Chokubaku'  2 km from the hypocenter / 16 years old at the time
I think it was when the massive mushroom cloud was billowing upward that I realized, this is something out of the ordinary. Suppressing the pain I was feeling, I started running for my life. People everywhere were running wildly about.
K K (female)
'Chokubaku'  2 km from the hypocenter / 10 years old at the time
An old woman carrying her dead grandchild upside down on her back cried desperately over and over again, "Where are the enemy planes? Where are the enemy planes?" The scene is imprinted into my memory.
Akio Nakanishi (male)
'Chokubaku'  1.1 km from the hypocenter / 18 years old at the time
I saw people coming toward me in a line. Skin peeling off, they looked as if tattered clothes were hanging from their bodies. Their exposed flesh was such deep red that I would have bet it had been treated with mercurochrome.
Yoshiteru Oba (male)
'Chokubaku'  1.7 km from the hypocenter / 19 years old at the time
By that time the whole of Hiroshima was on fire and with wet handkerchiefs over our noses to avoid the enveloping smoke, we walked among the dead bodies lying everywhere.
Masamichi Shibuya (male)
'Chokubaku'  1.8 km from the hypocenter / 14 years old at the time
Later when I learned how powerful the bomb blast had been, the sensation of floating above the platform was restored to my memory.
