Messages from Hiroshima

'Chokubaku' means that the person was exposed to the A-bomb directly in Hiroshima or Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped.

My determination is to pass on stories of the atomic bombing to the younger generations, despite being too young to remember.

My sister passed away on August 25 without receiving medicine or treatment of any sort. She only said, "Thank you, sisters," before she died.

There prevailed a warning that drinking beverages would pose a danger to bomb victims immediately after injury. The burning thirst, however, did not allow me to resist the temptation to suck on a wet towel. After a while, I vomited a large amount of dark red blood.
Hama Hayashi (female)

My eldest son, who was exposed to the A-bomb when he was one year and eleven months old, prayed to God, saying, "Please cure my illness. If I get well, everybody will be happy." His life came to an end at six years and three months.

With a terrible roaring sound that felt like it would tear my body apart, the building collapsed violently. I ran for my life while the walls came down around me.
Kazuo Tani (male)
'Chokubaku'  2.8 km from the hypocenter / 19 years old at the time
As we waited for the air raid warning to be lifted, there was a blinding flash of blue light and a terrible blast.
Tokiko Nose (female)
'Chokubaku'  2.1 km from the hypocenter / 18 years old at the time
The dead bodies were all swollen, their eyes staring at me like a Nio-Sama statue*. I had just turned eighteen. I was so scared that I ran back home.
Masayoshi Miyake (male)
'Chokubaku'  4.5 km from the hypocenter / 23 years old at the time
When I went to one air raid shelter in the city, I found people dead who hadn't received any aid, who had been complaining about their pains until the previous day.
