Messages from Nagasaki

'Chokubaku' means that the person was exposed to the A-bomb directly in Hiroshima or Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped.

Just as my mother had said that something was falling from the sky, there was a flash and a loud explosion. Our sliding doors were blown to pieces by a ferocious blast of wind, and inside the house we could barely see because of all the dirt and dust.

I always think that if only there had been no war and the A-bomb had not been dropped, my body would not have become like this.

When I looked back toward the city center, I saw a burning fire, hard to define either as flames or light. It came from the sea at high speed accompanied by a thundering sound, as if trying to rush at me.

After several days, I saw many people wrapped with bandages and white gauze being carried on freight trains.

Three parachutes? Why now? The next moment clouds of dust and sand occurred.

The cruel scenes that I saw on my way to the city center to look for my father's bones when I heard that a new type of bomb had been dropped on Nagasaki. The charred bodies and the swollen corpses. These terrible pictures remain inside me as haunting memories.

Wounded people, with their faces and hair scorched, were coming towards us…..to escape from the horror. When I saw this sight, I knew we had lost the war.

The A-bomb robbed my family of a happy home and made our home dark and isolated.

When I first saw a dead body I was shocked and petrified with terror, but I remained in that hellish world day in and day out and came to see the corpses just as objects. My senses were paralyzed.

More than 50 of the wounded were lying around the schoolyard waiting to be helped. There were people who had suffered burns with glass shards piercing their skin, people whose skin was hanging off the bones from the bomb blast, so on and so on.
