Messages from Nagasaki

'Chokubaku' means that the person was exposed to the A-bomb directly in Hiroshima or Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped.

I still remember the eeriness of the piles of burning bodies, the smoke and the stench.
Matsue Kanzaki (female)

I couldn't get rid of the sight, haunted for years, and hated nights approaching.
Masahiro Tagawa (male)
'Chokubaku'  2.6 km from the hypocenter / 6 years old at the time
Although it wasn't night, it quickly became unusually dark, and as a child, I was very fearful that something terrible had happened.

To this day, I can't say how many of my teachers and classmates died because of the atomic bomb.

Seven neighbors were killed within a radius of ten meters [about 33 feet, or 11 yard] from my house.

A train had collapsed, its passengers reduced to skeletons. It was just impossible to accept that I was really seeing such things, so atrocious was the situation.
Etsuko Yamasaki (female)
'Chokubaku'  5 km from the hypocenter / 7 years old at the time
Holding my sister in my arm and leading my brother by the hand, I escaped into the air-raid shelter, running barefoot over the pieces of broken glass.
Hatsuko Okimoto (female)
'Chokubaku'  / 19 years old at the time
After I managed to wriggle my way out of the crumpled-down building, I found that everywhere I looked had been completely devastated, the factories turned into twisted metal skeletons.
Masayo Yasumoto (female)
'Chokubaku'  4.2 km from the hypocenter / 20 years old at the time
I noticed some round things lying around there, which were apparently heads without bodies or legs. I couldn't identify my father's head so I left there.
Ryoichi Tabe (male)

Along the Urakami River, there were probably more than ten flights of stairs to go down to the bank of the river, one about every 100 meters [109 yards], and between 100 and 200 dead bodies were piled on each flight.
