The Road to the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (PDF)

This book consists of news stories previously reported by the Osaka-based Nuclear Coverage Team of the Asahi Shimbun . This compilation provides a detailed account of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War era. At the end of the 20th century, most people shared the view that nuclear weapons should be eliminated. Despite this consensus, nation states continued to develop nuclear weapons to deter attacks from other countries. Thus, nuclear weapons continued to evolve and proliferate. Reporting from citizens', rather than the nation states' point of view, the Nuclear Coverage Team tried to articulate why nuclear weapons existed and how to eliminate them. The staff writers of the team, who had covered stories on Hiroshima and Nagasaki for years, visited countries throughout the world and reported on various situations concerning nuclear weapons.

The book was published in 1999 and copies were donated to organizations in 107 countries including the United Nations, universities, libraries, nuclear disarmament activists and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The book is expected to serves as a reference for understanding current nuclear weapons issues.
