The English-language Asahi Shimbun makes digital push to reach global audience

The English-language Asahi Shimbun is aggressively entering the e-book market to reach out to readers with content tailored for a global readership. Asahi stories are now available on the iPad, Kindle and Sony Reader.

The newspaper's digital editions offer select articles translated from the Asahi Shimbun and Asahi-affiliated publications to help readers gain a better understanding of Japanese society, politics and business.

The newspaper's coverage of Japan is unparalleled in terms of depth and accuracy. It also offers timely East Asian news and analysis, focusing on China and the Korean Peninsula, as part of the newspaper's goal to become a valued source for news about Asia.

Another highlight of the digital editions is its extensive coverage of "cool Japan," where we look at anime, manga, hobbies, fashion and lifestyle trends. We also often run travel pieces.

Some of the series that are currently being run include a project focusing on Japanese active and successful in the growing Chinese market. Another project is Tsukiji Guidebook, a series on the lives of the people working in and around Tokyo's famous Tsukiji market. Each article focuses on a particular aspect of this unique, world-famous institution, describing the techniques and tricks of the trade in this bustling business.

AJW (Asahi Japan Watch) for the iPad

The English-language Asahi Shimbun made its debut on the iPad on Nov. 22, offering stories translated from the Asahi Shimbun and other Asahi-affiliated publications. The electronic publication, Asahi Japan Watch (AJW), runs business features and background pieces that explain what's happening in the Japanese economy, politics and culture, and where the nation stands in the world.

Another highlight is our extensive coverage of "cool Japan,'' be it anime, manga, hobbies, fashion or lifestyles.The iPad edition, taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the platform, offers full color photos, slide shows and graphics.

An easy-to-use 30-day story archive is built right into the AJW app. To subscribe, download the AJW app from Apple's App Store. A 30-day subscription is $9.99 (1,200 yen in Japan). AJW is published Monday through Saturday.

The Asahi Shimbun's Reader Edition

On Nov. 2, the newspaper started providing English-language news articles for viewing on the Reader, the e-book device sold by Sony Electronics Inc. in the United States. Sony Reader services are currently limited to the United States and are not available in Japan. There are two ways to buy the Reader edition. It can be directly purchased on the Reader via a wireless mobile connection. Users can also buy the paper via their PC and transfer it to their Reader. The monthly subscription is fee is $5.99 and a single issue costs $0.49. The Reader edition is published Monday through Saturday.

As of Nov. 29, the The Asahi Shimbun's offering ranked 6th among the 33 newspapers available on the Sony Reader.

The Asahi Shimbun's Kindle Edition

The newspaper's Kindle edition was launched Feb. 8 as the e-book edition of the paper. Issues are automatically delivered to the Kindle device for immediate daily access. The edition is published Monday through Saturday. As of Nov. 29, The Asahi Shimbun's Kindle Edition ranked 15th among 135 newspapers around the world.

AWS (Asahi Weekly Select) for the iPad

In a related move, The Asahi Shimbun released in September an iPad app called AWS (Asahi Weekly Select), an electronic version of The Asahi Weekly, a bilingual publication for English-language education purposes.

The Asahi Shimbun's foray into the e-book market

The newspaper has also begun to publish e-books on Japan-related topics, starting with "Brave, Grave New World," a collection of interviews with 11 intellectuals by Yoichi Funabashi, editor in chief of the Asahi Shimbun. The book is available on Apple's iBookstore. Funabashi interviewed Singapore's elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew; World Bank President Robert Zoellick; Wang Jisi, dean of the School of International Studies at Peking University; Mathew Burrows, counselor to the U.S. National Intelligence Council; Louise Arbour, president and CEO of the International Crisis Group and the late historian Tony Judt, among others.
