■５分でいい　想像してほしい

　アフリカで何が起きているのか。想像してみて欲しい。

　７年前、ケニアのマサイマラ国立保護区へ旅をし、初めてアフリカの大地にふれた。野生動物の多さや空の広さに感動し、雄大な自然に圧倒された。

　帰国後、アフリカのことをもっと知ろうと、ドキュメンタリー番組や映画を見た。貧困、エイズ、飢餓、紛争……。平穏なケニアのすぐ隣の国ですら、様々な問題が起きていることを初めて知った。

　自分に出来ることはないか。そう思い、経営する会社の売り上げの一部を国連児童基金（ユニセフ）へ寄付し始めた。途上国の教育に使ってもらうことで、後世に残ると思ったからだ。

　でも、それで何か変わったのか、手応えがなかった。

　そんな時、ＮＧＯの「ほっとけない　世界のまずしさ」キャンペーンを知った。これなら、音楽を通して何かを伝えられる。０５年冬、他のミュージシャンと一緒に貧困撲滅を訴えるライブを行った。

　音楽には、世界の現実をわかりやすく、５万、１０万の人々に伝える力があると思う。僕が尊敬するＵ２のボノやジョン・レノンがそうしたように、ロックに携わる者として、様々な問題を伝え続ける責任があると思っている。

　アフリカは日本からはとても遠く、貧困や飢餓といった問題にも実感がわかないかもしれない。そんな時は、自分の立場に置き換えて考えて欲しい。例えば、アフリカの子供たちがエイズや飢餓に苦しんでいることを、僕は親として見過ごすことができない。

　寝る前の５分間でもいい。遠く離れた国々で何が起きているのか、自分に何ができるのか。想像してみるのも悪くはない。そこから行動が始まる。

　I want you to think about what’s going on in Africa.

Eight years ago, I first encountered Africa during a visit to the Masai Mara park reserve in Kenya. I was deeply impressed by the multitude of wildlife that roamed there below the vast sky. The magnificence of nature was overwhelming.

　After I returned to Japan, I wanted to learn more about Africa so I watched documentary programs and movies. That’s when I first learned about the many problems that plague even peaceful African nations like Kenya for example, poverty, AIDS, starvation and war.

　After thinking about what I could do, I began to donate part of the profits from a company I own to UNICEF. I thought I could help future generations by contributing that money toward education programs in developing nations.

　However, I received no feedback on any changes that my donations may have produced.

　Then I learned about a campaign organized by a nongovernmental organization to combat poverty. I felt through that campaign I would be able to communicate a message through my music.

　In the winter of 2005, I joined other musicians in a concert to focus attention on the need to eliminate poverty.

　Through my music, I have the power to reach 50,000 or 100,000 people and tell them what the situation is in the world in an understandable way.

　Like Bono of U2 and John Lennon, both of whom I greatly respect, I feel that as a rock musician, I, too, have a responsibility to tell my fans about the world’s many and varied problems.

　Africa is very far from Japan, and its problems, such as poverty and starvation, may not hit home to many Japanese. That said, I hope people here will think about Africa’s problems from their own point of view.

For example, as a parent I cannot ignore the fact that children in Africa are suffering from AIDS and starvation.

　Even if it is only for five minutes before you go to sleep at night, I think it would help if you could think about what is happening in faraway African nations and what you can do to help. That simple thought could lead to action.
