Going Digital Offers Perfect Opportunity for The Asahi Group to Leap Forward
An exhibition booth of terrestrial digital broadcasting is set up in TV Asahi’s first floor atrium.
The television broadcasting sector is now at a major turning point as it gears towards a complete transition to terrestrial digital TV programming, scheduled to be in place by July 2011. Already 84 percent of all households are able to view digital land-based telecasts, and a new service called “One Seg” that enables consumers to watch digital TV broadcasts on mobile devices such as cell phones is quickly expanding. For viewers, terrestrial digital broadcasting offers considerable benefits, providing high-quality images and better sound. Viewers also have access to up-to-date information via data broadcasting. Broadcasters, on the other hand, are required to make substantial capital investment, but it also represents a major new business opportunity. The Asahi Group, which operates a wide range of print, broadcasting and Internet media, believes that digitalization provides a great business opportunity that offers growth potential.

One of the pillars that support the group is our key station, TV Asahi, and its affiliated stations. Cooperation among the group members is the backbone not only of daily news coverage but also of providing reportage on high school baseball, national elections, and disasters. The total combined earnings of TV Asahi and its affiliated stations exceed 400 billion yen. The broadcasting stations and The Asahi Shimbun are the two wheels that propel the Asahi Group forward. In 2006, our key station TV Asahi achieved a prime time (from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.) viewing rate of 12.2 %, securing 3rd place. TV Asahi successfully created programs targeting young audiences, which helped the company secure top ranking for two successive years during prime time 2 (from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m.), achieving 8.6 %. The success was partly due to the TV Asahi is working hard to create dynamic TV programs based around it flagship “Hodo Station” news show and live coverage of sports events.

Our digital channel BS Asahi and our communication satellite (CS) broadcasting channel (Asahi Newstar) are also working on creating programs in collaboration with affiliated stations in the group, helping to further expand and strengthen the Asahi brand.

The Asahi Shimbun has top quality content grounded in its experience in the print media. As the core member of the group, The Asahi Shimbun will continue to take on challenges, fully utilizing the strengths of information dissemination ability and know-how accumulated by TV Asahi and its affiliated stations.
